Green Steel

“Steel is real”, that’s what snobs like myself always say. And for good reason. It’s a smooth ride, lugged bikes are more beautiful and the frame lasts a long time. But there’s another thing that steel has going for it…it’s more ecologically friendly than its material counterparts.

Steel is the most common, easily mined and least toxic of the bike materials. While titanium, carbon fiber and aluminum are light (note: Dedaccai steel is just as light), the manufacturing process for these materials require an amalgam of chemicals that can be harmful to the workers and the environment. And because steel lasts so long, it’s a better material pick for a used bike, which is the greenest of the green options. To sum it up, steel is real…good for the planet.
